If you can avoid these sugars, watch the weight drop, so read those nutritional labels!

The Sugars…

1. High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)

HFCS is a highly processed artificial sweetener made from corn. Why to avoid: it encourages fat production (high amounts of fructose can overwhelm the liver, which converts the sugar into fat, contributing to weight gain and fatty liver disease); it increases health risks (linked to metabolic syndrome, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease); and it adds empty calories with no essential nutrients.

2. Agave Nectar

Marketed as a natural, healthy alternative, agave is a highly refined syrup that's often worse than table sugar. Why to avoid: it's extremely high in fructose (up to 90%, more than HFCS), and that high fructose content strains the liver, raising triglycerides and contributing to fatty liver disease and insulin resistance.

3. Crystalline Fructose

A highly processed sweetener that's 99.5% pure fructose. Why to avoid: it's worse than HFCS; all of it must be processed by the liver, leading to fat buildup and possible liver damage; and it promotes metabolic issues like insulin resistance, elevated triglycerides, and heart disease.

4. Sucrose (Table Sugar)

Refined white sugar derived from sugar cane or beets and added to many processed foods. Why to avoid: it contributes to obesity and the chronic diseases that come with it; it lacks nutritional value (empty calories); and it's rapidly absorbed, causing blood sugar spikes that can lead to mood swings and fatigue.

5. Fruit Juice Concentrate

It sounds healthy, but most of the water, fiber, and nutrients are removed, leaving a thick, sugary syrup. Why to avoid: the intense heat used to make concentrate destroys heat-sensitive nutrients like vitamin C and removes beneficial fiber; without fiber to slow digestion, the sugar is absorbed quickly, spiking blood sugar; and many products that use it also include additional sweeteners.
